If you use social media, will you be depressed?

A pleasant day, readers! It’s great to know that you’re still reading my blogs. I hope you guys liking it. So before I start, I want to ask you a few questions. Do you often spend your time looking or checking your social media accounts? Because guys, I usually do that. How long does it take you? 1-2 hours? I hope it doesn’t take you that long. Because I read an article that talked about the social media as a cause of depression.

The article written by Jade Wu, PhD on January 16, 2020 at scientificamerican.com, discussed several study that points social media as one of the causes of depression. As I continue reading the article, I saw the research made by uber-prestigious journal JAMA and was titled “Association of Screen Time and Depression in Adolescence.” It was stated their that the higher amount of time we spend on social media can cause a higher levels of depression. Also, the article showed various caveats or warnings about the relationship of social media and depression. Jade Wu, PhD said,“I think it’s safe to say that at least we shouldn’t write off social media altogether.”

So what is the connection of this article to me and my blog? If you want to know about it, just keep on reading guys. Enjoy!

Since the article discussed about depression and social media, this article can help me as I continue in writing my blogs. The topic is somehow related to my blogs which talks more about people. I can use this article as a guide in discovering myself.

Mental Health awareness was greatly shown in the article. As you can see in the graph, the 2nd highest rate of people having a mental health problem is depression. It is widely known that some people aren’t focusing in mental health issues. How about you? Are you aware in the state of your mental health? I hope you are because if you do, that would mean a lot.

I honestly spent most of my free time checking on my social media accounts especially Facebook and Twitter. I always do that because those are some of the ways I can connect with my family and friends. Also, these social media serves as a way for me in checking some updates from them. That’s why I was overwhelmed by the article the first I read it. The article made me realize that I should lessen my time in checking my accounts because that can trigger my emotions that can lead to worst which is having a depression.

The key to benefitting from social media may lie in using it in moderation and to stay socially connected, instead of using it as a crutch for coping with other stressors and mental health problems.

(Wu, 2020)

The article is indeed useful. It reminds me that using social media is good but in moderation. I also realized that I should be aware of my mental health.

Will I recommend the article to you guys?

Of course, I will. It is really helpful guys. I suggest that you find time reading the article and articles connected with this topic because it will assist you as you evaluate your self and as you spend your time in social media.

That’s all for this blog. Thank you, guys! Stay hydrated!
